South loses in Class B prequarters

Williamsville South became the first Town of Amherst school to exit the Section VI girls lacrosse tournament, losing 13-5 to Iroquois in a Class B prequarterfinal on Thursday, May 17.

South held Iroquois to three second-half goals.

Katie Kruez, Grace Dabedo, Liz Gengo, Gina Rutecki and Caitlin Richie scored goals for South. Hally Stone and Nita Bhatia provided strong defense. Goalie Krista Pomeroy made 15 saves and helped keep South in the game. Caitlin Burke, Alyssa Ashcroft and Daragh Kerr also played well.

"We are looking forward to next year and will be playing in the summer league in the area as well as in the winter league," said South coach Jessica Gunning. "We are hopeful that by playing together all year-round against competitive teams will lead to a more successful season, as we have a very tough division including Amherst, East Aurora, Iroquois and Williamsville East. We have 13 players returning next year and a lot of younger players coming up with a lot of potential because of the great work being done at the modified and JV levels by coaches Mary Ferenczy (modified) and Kristy Coleman (JV)."
