Queen City U-12 girls place second at tournament The Queen City Girls U-12 Futbol Club won second place in the prestigious Greece Buccaneers Tournament held in Rochester, N.Y. this past weekend. Playing four games in two days, Queen City finished with a 3-1 record. In their first game Saturday morning, Queen City played the Horseheads Revolution, prevailing 4-1. Goalkeeper Cathryn Mahon, who played spectacular during the entire tournament, made many fine saves in this game. Queen City goals were scored by Nika Berrafato, Liz O'Loughlin, (two goals), and Angela Sobotka. In their second game on Saturday, Queen City beat Buffalo United, 6-0. Queen City goals came from the feet of Hannah Crofut, Dana Esposito, Liz Cournan, Madison Sansone, Remmington Zaepfel, and O'Loughlin. On Sunday morning, the Queen City girls played the host Greece Buccaneers and won 2-0. The first Queen City goal came after Carissima Cutrona let go a strong blast that the Buccaneer goalkeeper was able to get a hand on but not control. Cutrona followed up the shot passing the rebound to Berrafato for the first goal. That goal held up until the last seconds when Berrafato scored on a breakaway sealing the victory and giving Queen City the opportunity to play in Paetec Park, home of Rochester's professional soccer team, the Rhinos. Queen City played a spirited championship game against a good Mississauga, Ont. team. The Mississauga team, nicknamed the "Dixie", showed no southern hospitality, scoring one goal early and a couple late goals to win 3-0. Other Queen City players who had great tournament play were, Emily Spoth, Meghan Keating, Liza Convertini, Gabrielle Bello, Kendra Dix, Emilia Federicci and Dina Rommel. Zaepfel, O'Loughlin, Dix, Rommel and Spoth are from Clarence. Up next for Queen City is the Empire Cup Tournament hosted by the Rochester Junior Rhinos. |
