Girls lacrosse Sacred Heart took many strides in girls lacrosse this season. The Sharks won three games, the most in school history, and played teams tough in most losses. Sacred Heart also won its first Monsignor Martin Association playoff game, defeating Buffalo Seminary, 13-9, on Saturday, May 19. However, the Sharks' season came to an abrupt end on Monday, May 21 as they fell 13-5 to top-seed and two-time defending MMA champion, Mount St. Mary's. Sacred Heart lost 19-2 against Mount St. Mary's on Friday, May 11. "In my book, losing by only eight goals against them is pretty good. They've been blowing teams out," said Sharks coach Emily Canty. Freshman attack wing Emma Frieh gave Sacred Heart a short-lived 1-0 lead early in the first half but the team trailed for the rest of the game. Frieh finished with two goals as did coach Canty's younger sister, Mary. Liz Briody also tallied for Sacred Heart. Goalie Anna Monaghan made 12 saves. Defensive winger Alex Femia was the Sharks' ground ball leader. Against Buffalo Seminary, Frieh scored three goals and controlled the game, coach Canty said. "She got a lot of the balls off draws," said coach Canty. "Every time you looked, she was grabbing the ball from somebody." Briody and Sam Arena added two goals each. Mary Canty had four goals. Jenny Harb and Monique Mattes recorded single tallies. Monaghan made 10 saves. Mary Canty finished as the second highest goal scorer in the the MMA with 28 goals. Monaghan, Harb, and defensive wingers Courtney Wopperer and Rebecca Vu are key players graduating. "I couldn't have been happier with the season," said coach Canty. "The girls showed great sportsmanship and worked well as a team." e-mail: pnagy@beenews.com |
