North girls post best league season in almost 20 years It was a history-making meet for Williamsville North in their 81-60 win over Frontier on Tuesday, May 15. The victory clinched a 3-1 record for the Lady Spartans and second place in ECIC Division I, its best finish in league play since 1988. "The girls had a great indoor season and carried over into the outdoor season," said North coach Julian Blake. Emily Curry was a triple winner, taking first in the long jump (14-10), high jump (4-8), and triple jump (32-6). She also took second in the 100 hurdles. Sarah Mikulski won the 100 hurdles and joined Jessica Little, Ashley Redino, and Amy Loud in the team's first-place 4x100 relay in 52.9. Redino took first in the 400-intermediate hurdles (1:12.6) and pole vault (8-0) and was second in the 100 hurdles. Other winners were Loud (800, 2:31.8), Kim Schueler (1500, 5:22.7), Meredith Kirby (400 dash, 1:01.8), and Lydia Yemchuk (discus, 89-1). Second places went to Raven Baxter (long jump, 14-10), Loud (100, 13.3), Kirby (200, 27.9; triple jump, 31-9), Maureen O'Brien (discus, 81-10). Third places were awarded to Shelbey Gray (100 hurdles, 400 hurdles, 1:17), Lauren Triantafillou (400, 1:04.5), Loud (200, 28-0), Sarah Khan (pole vault, 7-6), Schueler (high jump, 4-6), and Michelle Bauman (triple jump, 29-7). At the WNY Classic at Lancaster High School on Saturday, May 19, Dohn placed second in the 400 (1:01.8) as did Redino in the long jump (15-9¾). Redino came in third in the 100 hurdles (15.7) and Curry was third in the high jump in 4-8. Sarah Khan came in fourth in the pole vault (7-6). Schueler was fifth in the pentathlon (1,748 points). Yemchuk came in sixth in the discus (90-1½) as did the 4x800 relay of Bauman, Dawn Hu, Melissa Dobmeier, and Molley Mitchell (11:20.6). Hu placed seventh in the 1500 racewalk (9:53.9). Dobmeier was 12th in the 3000 (12:46.9). North boys Matt and Greg Losi continued their domination of jumping events at the Carl Roesch Classic at Clarence High School on Saturday, May 19. Matt Losi won the long jump in a personal-best leap of 21-4, was second in the triple jump in 41-11, and was fifth in the 110-high hurdles. Greg Losi won the triple jump in 42-0 and was second in the long jump in 20-5. Kurt Schlewitt came in fourth in the high jump. North finished fifth overall. |
