Heim Elementary: a hive for great spellers

Four pupils at Heim Elementary School recently won honors - including a first place - at the New York State Spelling Bee.

In April, eight pupils traveled to Weedsport to participate at the state spelling bee, competing against the top three student winners from other regions of New York.

Heim pupils finished as follows:

First place: first-grader Anupama Iyer.

Second place: fourth-grader Caroline Sharp and third-grader Ananya Nrusimha.

Fifth place: second-grader Tyler Paplham.

In order to qualify for the state competition, pupils had to participate in a regional competition.

On March 24, Maple East Elementary hosted the annual regional competition of the New York State Spelling Bee.

The following Heim Elementary pupils finished in the top three of respective grade levels, earning a medal and also securing a spot to represent Western New York at the state bee:

First grade - third-place Anupama Iyer; second-place Christine Yu.

Second grade - third-place Tyler Paplham.

Third grade - third-place Abby Larson; second-place Melissa Helm and first-place Ananya Nrusimha.

Fourth grade - third-place Caroline Sharp and second-place Robin Marshall.
