Boys Tennis Because of enrollment, Amherst tennis had to move down from ECIC II to III. But after the way the Tigers dominated the league this spring, other ECIC III schools are probably hoping Amherst's stay is short. Amherst is 11-0 with one match left against Pioneer but even if they lost, they would still be division champs. Their closest matches have been 4-1 wins over Pioneer and Depew. Amherst coach Eric Damiani credits senior captains Ari Binder, Ken Schmidt, and Ryan Menasco as well as David Scirto for their hard work throughout their stay on the team. All except Binder have played since freshman year. Binder is the team's best player since he started as a seventhgrader. He's never lost an ECIC match (68-0, 11-0 this season) at first singles and is the favorite to win the ECIC Singles championship this week at Lancaster High School. Schmidt is 10-1 at second singles this year. Sophomore William O'Neil-White is 8-2 at third singles. Measco and sophomore David Greetham are 10-0 at first doubles. Scirto and junior Andy Taube are 9-1 at second doubles. Both teams are competing at the ECIC Doubles tournament scheduled for Thursday, May 17 and Friday, May 18 at Lancaster. e-mail: pnagy@beenews.com |
