Williamsville South earns season's second victory Williamsville South shut out Eden, 7-0, on Tuesday, May 8 for the team's second win of the season. Freshman goalie Krista Pomeroy recorded the shutout. Junior Grace Dedebo scored twice to lead the South offense. Seniors Katie Allen and Liz Gengo, junior Gina Rutecki and sophomore Ashley Ferenczy also tallied for South. Seniors Caitlin Burke, Jess Sheehan, and Hally Stone and junior Sara Crane provided great defensive play for the Lady Billies. South lost its other two games last week, falling 11-5 at Iroquois on Thursday, May 10 and 10-5 at Williamsville North on Saturday, May 12. South coach Jessica Gunning said her team started off playing well against Iroquois and kept the score very close. "It was another testament to how we have developed as a team this year," said Gunning. "They worked hard to shut down a great offense, and Krista (Pomeroy) had her best game of the year in goal with a total of 15 saves." Senior Michelle Terranova had a great game, having two interceptions and doing a great job of keeping the ball in the South end. Gunning lauded the defensive work of senior Nina Bhatia. Caitlin Richie also played a very tough game, trying to limit scoring chances for Iroquois and create opportunities for South, Gunning added. Gunning said her team played a great second half against North, outscoring the Lady Spartans, 4-1. "We dominated the second half offensively but could not score," said Gunning. Ferenczy scored twice, and Dedebo, Gengo and Caitlin Burke each had single tallies. Juniors Alyssa Ashcroft and Claire Licata and sophomores Ferenczy and Cailtin Kelly provided great play, Gunning said. Dedebo leads all South scoring with 10 goals. Gengo and Ferenczy have each scored eight times. Pomeroy has a save percentage of 70 and has played excellently, said Gunning. "We are really looking for her to continue developing," said Gunning. "Having such a strong presence in goal at a young age, she can only get better." |
