Edward D. Nellis, WWII veteran
Edward D. Nellis, 82, of Williamsville, who earned medals for his work in the U.S. Navy during World War II, died Saturday, May 5, 2007.

Mr. Nellis grew up in Lyons, N.Y. where he attended elementary and high school.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served aboard the USS LST No. 456 (Naval Transfer Station, Sampson, N.Y.) during World War II where he achieved the rank of gunner's mate second class before his honorable discharge in 1946. During his service, he was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal with one silver and three Bronze Stars in lieu of nine awards and the Philippines Liberation Medal with two Bronze Stars in lieu of three awards.

For the rest of his life, he was a World War II enthusiast with a special interest in the events that occurred in the South Pacific.

Mr. Nellis was a maintenance worker at the University at Buffalo, retiring in 1998.

He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Barberi of Bassett Manor in Williamsville; two sons, Deo of Pompano Beach, Fla. and Amasa of Media, Pa., and two grandchildren.
