Williamsville residents named GBYO concerto competition winners

The Greater Buffalo Youth Orchestra, under the direction of Gerard Floriano, will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 20 at Kenmore West High School, 33 Highland Parkway in Kenmore.

Tickets will be available at the door. The cost for adults is $10 and for seniors and students, $5.

The orchestra includes Gina DiBenedetto, David Greetham, Sam Suggs, Melissa Tschamler and William Zhou of Amherst; and Jonathan Ang, Samuel Ang, Kayla Woodworth, Natalie Berkman, Angelo Di Loreto, Hannah Huang, Joseph Isom, Jinjoo Kang, Emily Mangione and Michael Metzger of East Amherst.

Also, Holly Spohn of Getzville; Austin Oprean, Hao Qin and Magaret Wydysh of Snyder; and Sandra Berdick, Alex Boissonnault, Nadine Cohen, Katie Dryden, Cameron Kayne, Jiyoon Kim, Elana Korn, Ariella Korn, Dan Lamancuso, Alex Lamparelli, Allison Lyttle, Eric Mahl, Pamicka Marinello, Erin McGarry, Ioannis Mountziaris, Sara Scofidio, Jilene VanOpdorp, Hilary Wittmerm, Alexandra Snowden, Kyle Torres-Hiyoshi and Alexas Esposito of Williamsville.

The orchestra will feature two GBYO senior concerto winners. Dryden, a violist, will perform "Trauermusik" by Paul Hindemith. Boissonnault, a violinist, will perform Camille Saint-Saens' "Violin Concerto No. 3."

The GBYO is dedicating this concert to Cameron (1905-1960) and Jane Baird (1918-2007).

"The Greater Buffalo Youth Orchestra will be forever indebted to the Cameron Baird Foundation, begun by Jane Baird in 1961, shortly after the passing of her husband," said Janice Jones, general manager of the GBYO. "A violist, Cameron had studied composition in 1933 and 1934 with Paul Hindemith at Berlin's famed Hochschule für Musik."

The GBYO annually sponsors a concerto competition for GBYO seniors. Winners appear with the GBYO during the 2006-07 season.
