Relay start time getting closer
by JESSICA L. FINCH Associate Editor

It's not too late to sign up for the Amherst Dusk to Dawn Relay Challenge.

Co-chairman for the second year, Jud Heussler, 16, is recruiting teams to take part in the 12-hour relay, scheduled for May 25-26 at Sweet Home High School, 1901 Sweet Home Road.

A student at Park School of Buffalo, Heussler said the relay is a great opportunity to "blow off some steam before exam week."

"It's a good time to connect with friends, climb a rock wall and gain 10 pounds with all the food we'll have," he laughed.

In addition to relay teams, Heussler is also seeking donations and prize contributions.

The 2007 relay marks the seventh time the event has been held. It will begin with registration at 3 p.m. Friday, May 25 and end at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, May 26. The relay itself begins at 7 p.m. May 25.

"This year we are expecting 300 people," Heussler said, noting the number is 50 more than last year's total.

The community is invited to attend the opening ceremonies and events but must leave by 10 p.m. Friday. Only registered relay team members are allowed to stay overnight.

To register, visit www.amherst.ny.us, the keyword "youth," or call 631-7215. The cost is $30 per person.

Registrations will be taken through Wednesday, May 23.

Teams are encouraged to continue around the track for the 12 hours. There will be entertainment, contests, food and games throughout the night.

The relay benefits the Amherst Youth Board and Youth Foundation.
