Williamsville's Bock leads team to silver

Alex Bock of Williamsville took the reins and led his team to a silver medal at the Fencing Center of Buffalo's Teen Team Tournament Saturday.

Bock, who came very close to earning his E rating in foil from the United State Fencing Association in February, led tournament newcomers Stephanie Gerken of Williamsville and Jenna Wegrzyn of Orchard Park to second place.

The team, named the Wiffen Poofs, went undefeated in five pool bouts and earned the first seed in the tournament. In a very close semifinal match, the Wiffen Poofs bested the Bears, 45-39. that set up the team to face Samantha's Raiders in the championship match.

While the two teams were even in the experience department, Samantha's Raiders jumped out to a 25-15 win and held on to earn the 45-35 victory. Bock scored 25 of his team's points, twice rallying from huge deficits. In the final pairing, Bock fenced even with Samantha Anthony of East Aurora, 5-5.

Victoria Licata of Getzville, center, led Orchard Park's Katie Ostrander, left, and Williamsville's Nick Stanford to a bronze medal at the Fencing Center of Buffalo's Team Teen Tournament Saturday. The team, named the Bears, tied for third, after losing in the semifinals.
The Bears, consisting of Victoria Licata (Getzville), Nick Standford (Williamsville) and Katie Ostrander (Orchard Park), earned a bronze medal by tying for third place with Team X.

Sarah Boerschig of Amherst captained the Buffalo Bouters to a fifth-place finish.
