Williamsville South High School graduate Dana Carter put on an offensive clinic in recent softball games for the University at Buffalo. In four games over the weekend, she hit .364 (4 for 11) and was an integral part of all four of the Bulls' runs in a 9-4 loss to Western Michigan on Saturday, April 21. She jacked a three-RBI bases-clearing double and scored the team's fourth run on a wild pitch. Carter is batting .222 on the year and has started all 40 of UB's games in 2007.

Williamsville South High School graduate Jenna Schwartzmeyer allowed just four hits and no earned runs and had six strikeouts to help the Buffalo State College softball team to a 6-1 win in the second half of a doubleheader on Friday, April 20.

She also helped herself at the plate, hitting 2 for 4 with a run scored. Williamsville East grad Becky Shank, another member of Buffalo State, was 2 for 3.

The ninth annual WNY High School Academic girls and boys basketball teams will be held on Wednesday, April 25 at Illio DiPaolo's Restaurant, 3785 South Park Ave., Hamburg.

Twenty-two student-athletes will be recognized at the banquet, including Katie Keller (Sacred Heart), Katie Ostroot (Williamsville South) and Jordan Schrimmel (Depew) of the girls team and Matt Brennan (Maryvale), Garrison Gross (Cardinal O'Hara), Michael Perillo (Iroquois), Eric Schnirel (Sweet Home), and Ryan Young (Williamsville North) of the boys team. The criteria for selection are a 90 grade point average for a career, a senior, and a starter or important reserve. The average GPA for the group is 96. Seven earned All-WNY recognition. The event will begin at 7 p.m. with awards presentation starting between 7:45 to 8 p.m.

Lindsay Cornell of East Amherst, a communication arts major at Xavier University, received the University's Scholar-Athlete Award. It was presented during Xavier's All Honors Day celebration on Saturday, April 21. Cornell is on Xavier's women's golf team and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Cornell.

The Western New York Softball Hall of Fame will be holding its annual Alumni Reunion from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, April 28 at the Woodlawn Fire Hall, 3281 Lakeshore Road. Tickets for the event cost $10 and include snacks and beverages. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 361-4503.
