Sacred Heart wins opener, 15-8 Everything that could have gone right did for Sacred Heart in its girls lacrosse opener. The Sharks, who won one game in the past two years, romped Buffalo Seminary, 15-8, on Thursday, April 19. The win came as a shock to everyone, including first-year Sharks coach Emily Canty, who was a member of the school's inaugural girls lacrosse program in 2004. "All of the girls played phenomenally," said Canty. "They had their passes down, were getting ground balls and winning the draws right away. Everyone came together and played their hardest." Emily's younger sister, center Mary Canty, led the team with six goals, including one less than a minute in. Defender Sam Arena scored four times. Attack winger Jenny Harb, a team captain, and center Elizabeth Briody each tallied two goals. Talia Calabro scored once. First-year goalie Anna Monaghan made at least 15 saves. Coach Canty also lauded the defensive work of Rebecca Vu, Courtney Wopperer, Susan O'Rourke and Alex Femia. Sacred Heart (1-0) hosts Mount St. Mary's on Thursday, April 26 and Nardin on Monday, April 30 at the Kadimah School, 1085 Eggert Road, Buffalo. Both are 4:30 p.m. starts. e-mail: pnagy@beenews.com |
