Buffalo General hosts educational series

The Kaleida Health Foundation will present the fourth seminar in its educational series from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 10 in Swift Auditorium, A Building at Buffalo General Hospital.

The seminar's topic is Evolution and History: Exploring Advances in Hip and Knee Replacement.

In the United States, approximately 638,000 total hip and knee replacements are performed annually.

Dr. Kenneth A. Krackow, a surgeon and research pioneer in lower joint reconstruction and replacement, will discuss the history of orthopaedics at Buffalo General and the latest developments in the orthopaedic field, including computer assisted surgery and improved design of knee replacements.

Krackow, chief of orthopaedics at Buffalo General, graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a bachelor's degree in mathematics and studied medicine and graduate mathematics at Duke University in Durham, N.C.

In addition to his role at Buffalo General, he is also a professor of orthopaedic surgery at the University at Buffalo.

Through a collaborative effort between Buffalo General and UB, Krackow led the development of technology for computer assisted knee replacement surgery, which was launched at Buffalo General in 2001. It was introduced to orthopaedic surgeons nationwide in 2002.

The health series is free and open to the public. For more information, visit http://foundation.kaleiahealth.org or contact the foundation at 881-8260.
