Students can apply for leadership program

The Buffalo Bills and Time Warner Cable are seeking Western New York high school students interested in leadership development to join the 2006-07 class of Buffalo Bills Time Warner Cable Student Leaders.

The program is open to students who will be juniors or seniors as of September. Applications, due by Friday, May 18, are available beginning Friday, May 6 at www.buffalobills.com.

Entering its fifth year, the program is designed to provide students with unique experiences that will develop leadership skills, help them have an impact on their community and raise their awareness about various careers. The program recently awarded a $500 scholarship to one of the student leaders from 31 high schools throughout Western New York that comprised the 2006 Student Leader class.

From September through February, Student Leader participants attend meetings on the first Wednesday of each month at the Buffalo Bills facility. Each meeting consists of a presentation relating to a different aspect of leadership. Bills staff members and other Western New York professionals address students about career options.

The program also places a strong emphasis on community service and students are encouraged to volunteer at various Bills' community events. Also at selected monthly meetings, students receive Buffalo Bills and Time Warner Cable items to distribute at their schools. The items can be used as an incentive for participation in a food drive or another service-oriented campaign. Participating students play an active role on Bills' game days at Ralph Wilson Stadium including doing collections, distributing handouts and assisting with guest services.
