New Sacred Heart coach to field talented lineup Top to bottom, there may not be a better girls tennis team in the Monsignor Martin Association than Sacred Heart's. "I'm not worried about this team at all," said new coach Steve Insinna, who has coached tennis at Clarence and Alden schools. "Most of them have a lot of experience." The Sharks, 7-2 in 2006, will be led by senior co-captains Kristen Fish and Deborah Matteliano. Fish returns at first singles where she finished 9-3 and placed fourth at All-Catholics as a junior. Matteliano moves from second to first doubles and is paired with sophomore Emily Rodgers, a reserve last year. Matteliano can also play third singles if needed. Matteliano's doubles partner last year, Courtney Conway, gets the start at third singles. Matteliano and Conway lost to 2006 Shark seniors Katie Fish and Erika Conway in last year's All-Catholic doubles' final. Insinna said Conway has improved her game through lessons at the Village Glen and by competing in United States Tennis Association tournaments. Kathryn Przybyla, 9-1, at third singles as a junior, moves to second singles for her senior year. Senior Ashley Illuzzi and junior Margo Casciano start at second doubles. Junior Nora Balon could also see time at second doubles. Other reserves are junior Tia Krantz, sophomores Kelly Mroz, Katie Ostrander, Samantha Keyon, and Karen Schuster, and freshman Mary Beth Pandolfino. The opening of the Monsignor Martin Association girls' tennis season was postponed Monday because of rain and snow. Insinna said this spring's poor weather has made it rough to practice. So far, the team has practiced six times indoor and three times outdoors.
"Tennis balls don't bounce when it's below freezing," said Insinna. "Players are also more likely to pull a muscle." |
