Williamsville East seeks to improve record in league

Williamsville East's boys track team was winless in dual meets in 2006, but coach Kurt Holme hopes to improve on that mark this season with several promising athletes.

The Flames are led by junior captains Greg French, Zinan Cheng, Matt Pawlicki and Andy McDonald. Of the four, French is the best athlete, taking sixth at last year's Section VI outdoor track championships in the pentathlon and was the fourth-best hurdler in Western New York during indoor track.

This season, French will compete in the pentathlon (hurdles, long jump, high jump, shot put, 1500-meters) for invitationals and other postseason races and choose four of the pentathlon events for dual meets.

"The challenge is picking which events to put him in because he can win or score points in every event," said Holme.

Cheng can run sprints and compete in the jumping events, Pawlicki is a long sprinter and discus thrower and McDonald is a distance runner coming off a sixth-place finish in the 3200 during the indoor track season, Holme said.

The team's strongest seniors are Sean Lanighan (intermediate hurdler) and first-year track athlete, Andy Heim (high jump, long jump, 100, 200).

"Andy reminds me of kids who have gone to the state meet as far as his athleticism and power," said Holme. "He has a tremendous work ethic."

Other newcomers expected to help out are seniors Mike Alcazaren and Rocco DelGrosso (sprint, sprint relays, shot put and disc throws) and juniors Tyler Durinka (shot put, sprints) and Colin Begy (distance).

Sophomores making big contributions are Dan Egan (long jump, hurdles, sprints), Scott Ryan (distance runner), Max Fogel (mid distance), and Simon Park (sprints).

East opened the season on Saturday, April 14 at the eighth Early Bird Invitational at John F. Kennedy High School. Junior Zinan Cheng finished fourth in the long jump and Cheng was fifth. Egan also placed fifth in the small schools 110 hurdles.

The Flames' 3200 relay team also took home fifth place honors.
