Williamsville North couldn't have had a better season on the track than last year. The Spartans, a senior-loaded team in 2006, finished 4-1 in ECIC Division I, won ECICs and qualified six seniors for the New York State Championships.

With many holes in the lineup to fill this season, Spartans coach Brian Swatland is unsure how his team will fare. But one hole he does not have to worry about until next year are the jumping events, plugged by seniors Matt and Greg Losi.

The identical twins, back for their fourth years on varsity, were two of the best jumpers in Section VI as juniors, averaging over 42-feet in the triple jump and 21-feet in the long jump.

At last year's ECICs, Greg Losi won the long jump and was fourth in the triple jump and Matt Losi was second in the triple jump. At the Section VI Championships, Matt and Greg were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the triple jump.

What makes the Losi brothers stand out is their leg power.

"They're explosive through their lower body, have great technique, and are very consistent on each jump," said Swatland. "We don't have captains but they are certainly our seniors who lead by example."

Besides the jumps, Swatland believes that the 110 high hurdles and 400 intermediate hurdles, led by junior Steve Oehler, is a team strength.

Other athletes to look out for from North are senior Dave Johnson, junior Geoff Hurley, and sophomore Mike Thielman in distance events, seniors Brian Davis and Alex Weiser in sprints and senior shot put and discus thrower Richard Weiss. Johnson and Weiss enter their fourth years on the team.

Swatland said the rest of the team are freshmen and sophomores and he is unsure of which events they will compete in.

He also said the team should be competitive and win a lot of first places at invitationals.
