Depth aids division title repeat hopes for East tennis One of the reasons why Williamsville East has a good shot at repeating as ECIC Division II champions in boys tennis is its depth. "We have 18 players and there is very little difference between our first and eighteenth player," said East coach Randy Ball, whose team went 12-0 last year. "Our doubles should be very strong all year long because of the number of strong players we have competing for those spots. Our singles players are solid and should hold their own in league play." The starting lineup has yet to be determined but Ball has a good idea of who will play at a singles and doubles position. Junior Matt Kweller, sophomore Jerome Luo and senior Mike Metzger will all be in the mix for a starting singles spot. Kweller, returning as a third-year starter, has played first doubles the past two years. Luo played second singles as a freshman. Metzger enters his fourth year on varsity. The Flames doubles teams will feature junior Joe Buran, a three-year starter at first singles, junior and three-year player, Marc Chaskes, freshman Andrew Legarreta, junior Richard Sina and senior Taylor Deer.
Ball said that without knowing the rosters of the other schools in ECIC II he expects another tough battle with Sweet Home and feels his team will be fighting for first place by the end of the season. |
