Williamsville North's outdoor girls track team will look towards several top athletes and some impressive newcomers for success in an ultra-competitive ECIC Division I.

"The girls will have their work cut out for them," said North coach Julian Blake. "They will be competing in a very strong division and facing some of the section's finest. However, this team is more than willing to step up to that challenge."

The Lady Spartans will be led by co-captains, junior Meredith Kirby and senior Ashley Redino. Blake said Kirby has been one of Section VI's top long jumpers and will also triple jump. She's also a threat on the track, running the 200- and 400-meters. Blake said Redino is one of the section's top hurdles, running the 100 and 400, and is a school record-holder in the pole vault.

North has several other returning athletes to the lineup. Back are senior Kim Dohn and juniors Emily Curry, Sarah Mikulski, Kim Schueler, Michele Bauman, Dawn Hu, Lidia Yemchuk, Katelyn Palka, Laura Hastings, Stephanie Carpenter, and Kayla Maxwell.

Blake said Dohn is an established sprinter who excels in the 400 and is versatile enough to run the short sprints and the 800.

Mikulski and Curry are coming off great indoor track seasons. Mikulski took fifth at the New York State Championships in the 55-meter hurdles. Curry qualified for indoor states in the triple jump.

"Curry dominates the field, competing in high, long, and triple jump and throwing discus," said Blake. "Mikulski is another strong sprinter and a top hurdler. She will test her talents this season in the 100 and 400."

Schueler, Bauman, and Hu bring strength and depth to the sprint and middle distance teams, Blake added.

Yemchuk aims to compete with some of the section's best in the throwing events, said Blake.

North also returns many sophomores. They are Amy Loud, Lauren and Caitlin Triantafillou, Sarah and Sana Khan, Melissa Dobmeier, Amanda Sheriff, Alex Nero, Maureen O'Brien, Anya Giarraffa, Emilee Slick and Leslee McGee.

Blake said Loud and Lauren Triantafillou were sectional contenders in indoor track.

"Loud's been an outstanding sprinter and hurdler and Triantafillou has exploded in the middle distance," he added.

Blake believes that Caitlin Triantafillou is beginning to come into her own in the 400 hurdles.

Sheriff and Sarah and Sana Khan look to provide their team with points in the pole vault. Sarah Khan made her first appearance in the event during indoor track sectionals.

Dobmeier, Nero, and McGee will lead the way for what should be the beginning of a strong and much needed distance team, Blake said.

Slick will continue to help in triple and high jump and Giarraffa and O'Brien will bring depth to an improving North throwing team, he added.

North has several new faces on the team, including juniors Chantae Miller and Julia Marcusa, who will help in distance events, and Allison Bauman, who can run middle distance and throw the shot put and discus.

New sophomores are Laura Lonski, Elizabeth Roll, Danielle Young, Shelby Stellrecht, Stephanie Kranz, Nenna Ferguson, Marine Andraud, and Cheynae' McDaniel. Lonski, Roll, Young, and Stellrecht will compete in the throwing events while Stellrecht will join the vaulters. Kranz and Ferguson will help the distance and middle distance teams and McDaniel and Andraud join an already strong and deep sprint team, Blake said.

Freshmen on the team are Molly Mitchell, Natalie Worley, Shelbey Gray, Raven Baxter, Jessica Little, Mackenzie Miller, Sherri Bauman, Kayla Talty, Kristi Putzig, Kristin Boreanaz, Meghan Winkle, Lauren Markarian, Hanna Hong, Alexandria Selva, Lena Carlo, Rebecca Castronova, Alisia Dixon-McMillon, Michelle Galluzzo, and Jessica Klein. Mitchell, Worley, and Gray could be the Spartans' future leaders, Blake said.

"Already, Mitchell has proven to be a worthy competitor," said Blake. "She provides the team with tremendous strength in the 800-meter range and gets stronger and stronger every day."

Worley, a cross country runner, brings depth to a developing distance team and has a never say-die personality, Blake said.

Gray could be one of the team's next top hurdlers.

"She has strength, power, and speed but beyond that she has that desire to improve," said Blake.

Blake said following the lead of these girls are several other strong contenders.

"Little and Baxter are showing to be two very impressive sprinters and with Winkle, Talty, Putzig, Boreanaz, Markarian, Hong, and Selva, there will be many to draw from throughout this season," said Blake.

Castronova, Carlo, and Macmillan are developing as promising middle distance runners and should help out as the season progresses, Blake said.

"Galluzzo and Klein are already throwing in the mid to upper twenties and showing a lot of improvement," Blake added.
