South track builds for its future
by PATRICK J. NAGY Reporter

Sam Hasan can see the future of Williamsville South track, and it looks bright. Hasan, the South girls track coach, said 18 of the 31 athletes on the girls' roster are freshmen or younger. The boys team, coached by Sean Leaderstorf, has another 21 athletes who are freshmen or younger.

"It excites me because we have young kids coming into the program who will hopefully buy into what we teach, work at it and develop years of success," said Hasan. "From when we first started on March 1 to now, their practice times have dropped dramatically."

Some of those newcomers on the girls' team include freshmen Amanda Breymeier, Jenny Mooney, Megan Munroe, Allison Shubert and Skye McCellean.

Breymeier is coming off a great indoor track season, qualifying for the New York State Championships in the high jump, but she should be strong in the 800-meter as well as the 400 intermediate hurdles; 100 hurdles; high jump; and 100, 200, and 4x400 relay, coach Hasan said.

Mooney qualified for indoor states in the racewalk and will run anywhere from the 800 to the 3,000 in outdoor.

Hasan said Munroe is showing promise in the 800 and 1,500, Shubert is doing a good job in mid-distance runs, and Mc- Cellean should do well in the 100 and 200.

Hasan returns New York State qualifier, freshman Allie Van Buren, and Section VI place finishers, seniors Jenna Hasan, Jennifer Lopez and Stephanie Amodeo.

Van Buren, who will run the 100 hurdles, 100, 200 and 400, made states last year as part of the Lady Billies' 4x400-meter relay team. She also finished eighth in the 100 hurdles. She's also coming off a section title win in the 55 hurdles during indoor track.

Jenna Hasan, who triple jumped to 10th place at last year's outdoor sectionals, is back in the triple jump as well as the 400 intermediate hurdles and 100 hurdles.

Lopez will throw the shot put and discus and is a co-captain with junior Colleen Hurtubise, a returning mid-distance runner (800, 1500, 3,000).

Amodeo returns in the pole vault. She set a personal record of 8-0 to tie for 10th at last year's sectionals.

Returning sophomore Cassiana Hyppolite will throw the shot, run the 100 and 200, and long jump.

Coach Hasan said the team is strong from the 100 to 800 and in short sprints, hurdles and mid-distance. South finished 3-2 last year.

Williamsville North graduate Meredith Cook debuts as the team's throwing coach.

The Billies will be led by tri-captains senior Paul Mangold, junior Alex Podvezko and sophomore Yahs Williams. Mangold, a sectional qualifier in the 3,200, will run distance as will Podvezko. Williams will run the sprints and be a horizontal jumper.

Others who show promise are senior Michael Payne (sprint, horizontal jumper), junior Sean Bowers and freshman Peter Galbo (distance and mid-distance events), and sophomore Jordan Lawson (100 to 400 intermediate hurdles, horizontal jumper). Another one to look out for is Russ Scheiss (relay).
