Strong senior class to lead Lady Panthers

There's not one area the Sweet Home girls lacrosse team is strong in, there are many. Lady Panthers coach Katie Tutak has senior leadership at every position, which as a new coach has made her life a lot easier.

"As a group, the senior class is very strong and mature," said Tutak, a former player at Sweet Home ('00) and Marist College ('04) who was coaching a high school team in Norwalk, Conn. prior to her return to Sweet Home.

Starting seniors include goalie Danielle Holloway, who Tutak said is very aggressive around the net and has amazing reaction time, defenders Brianne Galli, Sara Heron and Jessica Louttit, attack wingers Brooke Nieman and Marisa Kelly and homes, Caitlin Colkitt and Ashley Brant. Holloway (Division II first team), Colkitt (second team), and Louttit (honorable mention) are returning all-stars.

Kelly, Louttit, Nieman are three of the team's four captains. Senior Kati Baird, coming off a stress fracture, is the fourth captain. Baird earned division honorable mention last year.

Other starters include junior Katie Mazuchowski at defense, center Laura Nerber and sophomore home Rochelle Ricchiazzi. Junior defender Chrissy Strom has also seen playing time.

Sweet Home is 1-1 although its 10-9 double overtime loss on April 2 to Grand Island is under review because of an illegal goal. The Lady Panthers defeated Lake Shore, 9-7, last Wednesday. Sweet Home trailed 4-2 at halftime of each game.

Ricchiazzi scored three times, including the game-tying goal, to send the Grand Island contest into overtime. Colkott added three goals. Nerber (two goals, two assists) and Nieman (goal) also contributed. Lauren Korniczky, Brant, and Louttit each had an assist.

Holloway made 13 saves.

"She played so well. Had she not played well, the game would not have gone into overtime," said Tutak.

Against Lake Shore, Tutak credits Ricchiazzi's faceoff work for helping Sweet Home turn the game in their favor. She also scored twice and assisted on another goal in the game.

Colkott also stepped up, scoring the game-tying and go-ahead goals. Colkott finished with three goals on the day.

Neber scored twice and Brant and Kelly each had single tallies with Kelly's sealing the win. Mazuchowski had two assists, led the team in ground balls and did a great job finding open players in the midfield, Tutak said. Louttit added an assist.

Holloway only made seven saves but two of them happened in the last couple minutes as the Lady Panthers held on to an 8-7 lead. Holloway's second big save led to Kelly's goal with three minutes remaining. The team's defensive players, especially Heron and Galli, also played well, Tutak said.
