Offseason work helping Lady Billies
by PATRICK J. NAGY Reporter

Williamsville South is recommitted toward turning around its girls lacrosse program, and while it may not show on the scoreboard yet this spring, second-year head coach Jessica Gunning sees much improvement.

Gunning should know, as she coached a team of South varsity and JV players that went .500 on an indoor winter league at the EPIC Center.

"Playing indoor all winter showed a real commitment to improving their skills as much as possible, so they're not just picking up a stick as soon as the season starts," said Gunning.

"They also have a better understanding of how the game works and where to place the ball. By working with them all year long, I hope we can turn the close losses that we had last year in our favor this season."

Gunning returns 14 players from last year's 1-9 team, including senior tri-captains Katie Allen at third home, Michelle Terranova at midfield and Caitlin Richie at center. Other returning starters include the team's leading scorer from last year, senior midfielder Liz Gengo, senior defensive midfielder Caitlin Burke, senior defender Jess Sheehan, and juniors Caitlin Kelly (first home) and Colleen Kielich (second home).

New starters include, from the JV, juniors Nicole DeSimone (defensive midfield), Claire Licata (cover point), Grace Dedebo (defense), and from modified, freshman Krista Pomeroy (goalie). Sophomore Ashley Ferenczy will fight for a starting midfield position, as will Gina Rutecki at a home position.

South opened with a 17-5 loss at Amherst on April 3. Gengo scored twice for South. Rutecki, Desimone and Terranova each tallied once. South outscored Amherst 4-3 in the second half.

The defeat does not deter Gunning, who is excited to see how her team will be able to improve from last year.

"The girls have such a positive attitude that will carry us through the year," Gunning added.
