Out of the Past 125 Years Ago April 13, 1882 It is with sincere sorrow that we write the words that announce the death of Mr. Sidney Parker, which occurred about 11 o'clock Tuesday night, of typhoid fever. He was 23 years, 9 months and 21 days old, being born in the Town of Clarence. He later moved to Williamsville, where he married Miss Annie Wetzel, who, with a young son, survives him. It has been suggested that an arch at the entrance to the Williamsville Cemetery is a needed improvement and one that the majority of those interested would probably be in favor of making. When you plant peas, lettuce and radishes, plant enough so that you can send a specimen to the editor. "'How are you getting along?' asked a widow of her late husband, who appeared to her one midnight as a ghost. 'Very well indeed, much better than during my married life on earth,' he replied. 'Oh good, then you are in heaven,' she asked. 'No,' the husband replied." 100 Years Ago April 11, 1907 Little Esther Wehner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Wehner of Swormville, was attacked by a dog, the animal biting off the tip of her nose. At a public meeting held at the Mansion House, it was explained that Main Street could be paved 40 feet wide with bricks at an expense of about $100 per foot. The state would pay 50 percent for the improvement; the county, 35 percent; and the town, 15 percent. 75 Years Ago April 14, 1932 The farm owned by the Philip Edighoffer estate, consisting of 72 acres, has been sold to Dr. William L. Dolley. The farm has its residence on the Heim Road and also has frontage on the Hopkins Road. Emmett Brown of Westfield Road left the Glen Theatre Saturday night with a nine-tube, all-electric Bosch radio, and it didn't cost him a cent. He was the lucky winner of a prize awarded by the theatre last week. Miss Mary Garrison was awarded the free permanent wave offered by the Evelyn Beauty Shop in connection with the opening of their new location on Main Street near North Cayuga Street. With the opening of baseball season this week comes the first real harbinger of spring to the dyed-in-the-wool sports fan. The Blue and White of Williamsville High School will again be fighting for the gonfalon in the Northern Erie High School League. Amherst Central will again have a representative on the field and should develop sufficient caliber for entrance in a league shortly. Past 50 Years Ago April 11, 1957 Don J. Marquette has accepted the principalship of the new Sweet Home Central Junior-Senior High School. Norman C. Vergils has been advanced to Supervising Principal of the district. Madonna Marie Kissel of Eggertsville was awarded a trophy in the waltz contest at the cotillion held at the Buffalo Athletic Club on April 5. Numerous complaints have been received about the use of BB guns by children. Mrs. Russell Sturm, a member of the Executive Board of the Academy Street School P.T.A., writes: "Every year we read of some child who loses an eye because of a BB." 25 Years Ago April 7, 1982 Judy Mero and Larry Singer of Amherst were both recognized in the National Jewish Welfare Board communications competition. "I'd gladly do it all over again," said Sister M. Irma, O.S.F., as she prepared for retirement and 47 years of caring for the elderly. Heim Middle School students topped off an industrial arts program with crepes, ice cream and homemade maple syrup made from 40 gallons of sap collected from 13 nearby trees. Miss Margaret Measer, 71, former Amherst deputy town clerk, died Monday, April 5, 1982. |
