Final storm sweep missed by some residents
by JESSICA L. FINCH Associate Editor

A final one-time sweep of the town, funded the Federal Emergency Management Agency, has already begun in the Town of Amherst.

Highway Superintendent Bob Anderson said the crews started in the southern portion of town on March 28 and will be moving northward for the next three weeks.

"Residents are confusing this with the spring brush cleanup. This is a one-time rush through the town to pick up the leftover debris," he said. "The normal annual spring brush cleanup will be in May."

The $25,000 made available by FEMA will not be enough for the cost of the cleanup, Anderson said, but will allow for some of the remaining debris to be picked up.

Anderson said on Tuesday that the highway crews would be reaching Maple Road this week.

Areas such as Eggertsville and Snyder have already been passed through. Anderson said he has noticed areas where residents have placed debris out after seeing crews there the day before. Once the crew has passed through it will not return as part of this final sweep, he said.

Anyone who missed the pickup can still place debris out on normal refuse days. Sticks must be cut in 4-foot lengths and bundled or put in open garbage cans.

For information, call Amherst highway at 631-5990.

The Village of Williamsville will continue to pick up any debris from the storm that residents pull to the curb, according to village officials.
