Grannis is not the man for the job

Gov. Eliot Spitzer has nominated Pete Grannis for director of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. It would seem proper to nominate a person that had a background in environmental service, biology or habitat management rather than Mr. Grannis, who possesses none of these qualifications.

Mr. Grannis is a lawyer and member of the State Assembly, where he has had a long track record of hostility toward New York hunters and shooters. During his tenure he has sponsored and signed on to numerous anti-gun and anti-hunting bills.

New York's hunting heritage is a vital part of the state's economy. The direction and leadership of the NYSDEC must not be given to a man with a track record of constant hostility to the sport.
