Indoor Soccer The bounces weren't going the Amherst Rovers' way in its 5-0 Buffalo Western New York Junior Soccer League indoor travel soccer loss against the Lockport Lightning on Saturday. Amherst had the ball in Clarence's end for a significant portion of the game but couldn't seem to turn the pressure into solid scoring chances. Sarah Snyder made a nifty move to get past defenders and get a shot on net early in the game. Colleen Stelley had another big game on defense, stopping multiple breaks as last defensive back. She was not even fazed when one resulted in a frightening collision that sent both players crashing to the ground. Jade Brooks seemed to be everywhere defensively, knocking balls away, blocking shots, and stifling attackers at every turn. Emily Saint more than once stole the ball from attackers and sent it back the other way and otherwise harassed advancing Lockport players. Kali James made some nice plays in net, more than once charging into the middle of a fray in front of the net to knock the ball away out of danger. Clarence Stingrays 4, Rovers 1 The game was played pretty evenly with both team getting bouts of offensive pressure. Clarence scored twice in rapid succession midway through the first half and it looked like they might be on the verge of running away with it but Amherst came back with a goal with just 10 seconds left in the half to bring the score to 2-1. Despite Clarence putting it out of reach with two more goals in the second half, Amherst continued to play hard until the end. Courtney Sugarman scored Amherst's only goal with a big blast from far out after the ball came to her out of a crowd in front of the net following a corner kick. She beat the goalie to the far side of the net. Julia Struble nearly scored late when she took a pass and moved in close but just missed past the far post. Allie Troncone had the goalie's number as she repeatedly intercepted throws and kicks to keep the pressure on. Joy Thomson led some impressive charges into Clarence territory, beating multiple defenders along the way. Chelsea Stachura made some nice saves in net, including one hard one in the gut on a free kick from close range. |
