Cutting of trees is too early

A beautiful silver maple tree stood in front of our home. Its broad leaves were shady in the summer and golden in the fall. Along came the October storm, and like other trees it lost many branches. Visiting tree experts said wait until spring - it will come back.

But early one Saturday morning in January an out-of-state tree trimmer in a monster orange truck arrived and began whacking away at some of the remaining branches. Why? National Grid had ordered the branches that hung over their wires to be cut. Even the trimmers thought it was too radical. Still, they said, wait until spring - your tree may come back.

Then on the first day of spring a dreaded red X appeared on our tree. It means the tree will be evaluated, we were told - when the leaves come out we thought. One day later our tree was gone.

All those involved in the removal of our trees have shown a lack of concern for the homeowners who should have been given an opportunity to question the decision. The trees never had a chance.
