Yoder's four goals send Pee Wee Flyers past Red Wings Mitch Yoder picked the right time to have his best game of the year. With the Pee Wee Flyers in a must win situation entering Sunday evening's game, Yoder and the rest of the Flyers responded by upending a strong Red Wings team, 5-3. The win advances the Flyers to the semifinals on Wednesday night. Yoder started the scoring early in the first period with assists from Stephen Soos and Alex Cleeland. The Red Wings responded shortly afterward with a goal by Jonathan Hayman. Brian Bookbinder assisted. Yoder made it 2-1 Flyers with his second tally of the night, unassisted. Eighteen seconds later, Casey Willer scored on a beautiful backhand shot over the shoulder of Red Wings goalie Jake Griebner. Cameron Tolsma and Jake Alessandra assisted on the effort which started with strong forechecking by Nick Cieslica. Yoder added to the lead with his third of the game with an assist from Lauton Rushford. Thirty-eight seconds later, Yoder made the score 5-1 with another assist from Soos. In total, the Flyers scored four times in less than five minutes to build the 5-1 lead. However, the Red Wings continued to press forward and before the end of the second period, Shaun Barayni took a Hayman pass, skated through the Flyers defense, and beat Flyers goalie Joe Picone with a great wrist shot to make the score 5-2. The Red Wings started the third period quickly as Hayman netted his second of the night to close the gap to 5-3. The remainder of the third period featured strong goaltending and several spectacular saves by Picone and Griebner, as neither team could add to their totals. The Flyers stymied the Red Wings pressure with strong defensive play from Adam Schaefer, Alex Cleeland, and Dan Schlein. |
