Micron Red Sabres push playoff record to 3-0 The Micron Red Sabres kept rolling with consecutive wins in the playoffs, putting their playoff record at 3-0. The two wins over the weekend (3-2 over White Sabres, 5-3 over Black Sabres) fortified their chances of continuing the postseason. The first game started with Red Sabre Matthew Barbolini scoring with an assist by Adam Pohrte. The Red Sabres went up 2-0 when Griffin Green scored on a nice breakaway. The White Sabres came within one when Zach Rehbaum scored after a one-on-one with the goalie. With less than four minutes left in the game, White Sabre Zach Rehbaum tied the game from Patrick Gilbert. With only 2½ minutes left, Cameron Briere scored the winning goal with an incredible assist from Adam Pohrte. The star of the game, however, for the Red Sabres was Ben Weppner, who stopped several scoring chances and even took a few off the body and face mask. Equally good in net was White Sabre Colin Branka, who made some amazing saves and incredible blocks. In the second postseason game, the Red Sabres went up 2-0 with two breakaway goals by Briere and Barbolini. The Black Sabres countered with a goal from Jack Smith. However, Green put the Red Sabres up 3-1 with an assist by Barbolini. Kevin Halpern of the White Sabres scored to put the game at 3-2. Green, however, scored on a breakaway to put the Red Sabres back up by two. Early in the third, the Black Sabres made it a close game with a second goal by Smith. With only a minute remaining, the Black Sabres pulled its goalie in an attempt to tie the game. However, Jeffrey Cummins made a nice defensive play and scored an empty netter. The stars of the game were Gunnar Weppner and Green for the Red Sabres, and Smith and Eric Cretella for the Black Sabres. The goalies played well, making stops left and right. |
