Trossman's shutout leads Stars to win over Red Wings The Mite Stars wrapped up the 2007 playoffs with a 3-0 win on Sunday over the Red Wings, capping a stellar postseason where they tied the Black Sabres with a league-high 10 points (4-0-2). The game was a tightly fought battle, with defense and goaltending as the main differences. The Stars got on the board early as Connor Bender broke free on the first shift and beat Red Wing Ryan O'Donnell with a hard wrist shot to the stick side. O'Donnell had a very good game though, stopping many Stars' shots and stoning Bender, Jake Siegel, and Max Ferro on breakaways later in the game. At the other end of the rink, Michael Trossman hung tough, fiercely defending his turf as he stopped three separate Matt Grugnale breakaways on the way to his second shutout this year. As the first period wound down, the Stars' first line of Jake Siegel, Cam Carney and Bryce Baker crashed the net after a Bender shot. The puck came out and Baker slammed it home, putting the Stars up by two. The second period was scoreless as the teams battled end to end trying to get shots on net with the Wings' Robbie Marshall and Joel Giambra trying to get many shots through, but both defenses prevented their opponents from pulling the trigger over and over. Joe Tomczak, Cam Murray, Leah Kramer and Michael Gagliano all came back for the puck and kept it away from the Wings' offense as they tried to get into the Stars' zone. As the third period got underway, Matt Schrlau got the puck after winning a faceoff in the Wings' end and flipped it high into the air. The puck came down behind O'Donnell and trickled over the line, rounding out the Stars' scoring. |
