It was a record-setting New York State Championship meet for Sweet Home powerlifters.

Four school records fell at the 37th annual event held at Sweet Home High School.

Andrew Hopkins, Nick Christman, and Matt Lycett all broke school records. Hopkins broke a 23-year old record in the 220-pound division, bench pressing 320 pounds. He also edged tournament director Paul Strefeler's 19-year old record in total weight by 20 pounds (1,290 to 1,270). Hopkins was named co-most valuable lifter with Niagara-Wheatfield's Adam Ferchen.

Christman placed third in the unlimited class and set a school record in the bench press with 365 pounds. The old record was 335.

Lycett benched 225 in the 136-pound division, 20 pounds more than previous record holder Ben Usen.

Nick Terhaar and Chris Akromas placed sixth in the 200 and 220 pound divisions, respectively. Ryan Wilson was 14th at 220 pounds.

Strefeler credits the six with training in the Sweet Home weight room for its success.

"Those kids are always in the weight room before and after I'm done working out," said Strefeler.

As a team, Sweet Home placed fifth with 25 points. Churchville, who hadn't competed in the event since 1996, brought 30 powerlifters and took first with 100 points. North Tonawanda came in second with 70 points. Grand Island and Pioneer were third (60) and fourth (40), respectively. Kenmore East and Maryvale (tie for sixth, 12), Kenmore West (10), Niagara-Wheatfield (9), Canisius, Lancaster and Letchworth (8) and Amherst (6) rounded out the team scores.

Although there were fewer competitors than last year, Strefeler said the event was a success.

"We got great feedback from the coaches and were very happy with the judging," he said. "It ran very organized."

Prior to the meet, world record holder Paul Childress, a competitor at the NYS Championships in the 1980's, discussed proper training technique and benched 315 pounds for 15 times.

Strefeler said the event raised over $1,000 with proceeds going towards the Sweet Home track team and the school's fitness center. Sponsors included Dick's Sporting Goods, who donated $10 coupons for the top three finishers of each weight class, Tim Horton's, Pepsi, Coca-Coca, Upstate Milk, and Manhattan Bagel.
