SABAH takes to the ice More than 650 athletes with disabilities, along with 400 volunteers, will participate in SABAH's Celebration on Ice 2007 at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 25 at HSBC Arena. The event, which is entering its 30th year, gathers the community together to support Western New York athletes with physical, cognitive and emotional challenges. SABAH skaters of all ages will showcase the skills they have developed during the past six months in weekly therapeutic ice-skating sessions. Groups from the following rinks will perform in the Celebration on Ice: Amherst Pepsi Center, Hamburg Town Rink, Niagara University, North Buffalo's Tacoma Rink and Riverside Park's Bud Bakewell Rink. "There is so much enthusiasm at our rinks right now," said Sheila O'Brien, SABAH executive director. "We've seen incredible heart and effort in our athletes and volunteers this season. It's been one of the best years ever for SABAH programs. Our skaters would love to share the fun with a big audience cheering them on at our show." The theme for this year's ice show is "SABAH Salutes the Oscars." Special entertainment at intermission will be provided by Buffalo Sabres Sled Hockey and Hasek's Heroes, local recreational hockey organizations for youth affected by physical disabilities or low socioeconomics. High school students from Holy Angels Academy, Mt. Mercy Academy and Nichols School are offering special support for SABAH athletes this year. These schools are participating in a school spirit program, competing for highest attendance at the Celebration on Ice. The winning school, determined by in-school ticket orders, will receive an assembly featuring a Buffalo Sabres representative as well as a wide-screen television. Tickets for the Celebration on Ice 2007 are available at www.tickets.com, at HSBC Arena the day of the show, or by calling 362-9600. |
