Speaking Out for Animals to hold second Chinese auction

Speaking Out for Animals, Inc., will host its second annual Chinese auction from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday, April 1 at Brennan's Bowery Bar and Restaurant, 4401 Transit Road.

The not-for-profit organization rescues animals from unhealthy, neglectful or abusive situations by caring for and finding them stable, loving homes.

SOFA is an active, no-kill rescue and adoption group. It helped one kitten, Simba, find a new home. The feline was found with his eyes swollen shut, gasping for air and full of maggots. The agency immediately brought him into the Emergency Vet Clinic, which told the volunteers the cat probably wouldn't make it through the night.

Simba defied the odds with the help of the animal caretakers, who nursed him back to health and ultimately found him a home.
