South freshmen compete at states

Allie Van Buren, Jenny Mooney and Amanda Breymeier were some of the best Section VI had to offer at Saturday's New York State Championships but all three freshmen came up short.

Van Buren, the Section VI champion in the 55-meter hurdles, ran a 9.10 in prelims at states but missed the semifinals by one spot.

Mooney, the second-best racewalker in the section, came close to breaking the school record in the event, finishing 13th in 8:34.87.

Breymeier, the section's No. 2 high jumper, could not clear the required 4-10 jump at states and no height.

"It was a good learning experience for them," said South coach Sam Hasan. "It's awesome that they will be back for the next three years."

Amherst Central

Willie Jones led all section high jumpers at states with a 6-4 for sixth place. Brenna Symoniak was 20th in the 3000-meters in 10:53.66.
