A Musical Improv to raise funds for scholarships Samuel Balduc, noted musician and founder of Therapeutic Musical Intervention, will host Amherst Lodge 981's A Musical Improv. The event, which will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 10 at 5808 Main St., Williamsville, will benefit a scholarship fund for local high school musicians. Balduc, a member of Lodge 981, began playing the violin at age 10, graduated from high school at 13 and played in various orchestral symphonies across the United States. He started Therapeutic Musical Intervention to help children with disabilities. "It was difficult to study in college at such a young age," Balduc said, noting that the scholarships will be awarded not only to musicians but also to students looking to pursue a career in visual and liberal arts. "We want them to know we respect what they are doing," the violinist said. The night will consist of performances from 10 musicians, including guests from New York City and Los Angeles. Bill Lambert, a music teacher at Harris Hill Elementary, will play the piano during the concert. "We believe in being active and leading by example," Balduc said. "We want to show them (aspiring musicians) we appreciate the work they are putting in." The concert will consist of an eclectic collection of works from Johann Sebastian Bach to Ludwig van Beethoven. As the evening progresses, sounds from the blues and jazz eras will be played. In the second act, the musicians will perform improvisational works. "We're going to end in a jam session," Balduc said, noting that that will include vocals and popular music of today. Advance tickets are advised as seating is limited. For more information or to purchase tickets, call Dennis Hoban at 626-5848. Those interested in applying for a scholarship should also call the lodge. |
