Amherst High Choirs to sing with WNY Chamber Orchestra

The Amherst Central High School "Sweet Sixteens" and "Varsity Singers" will appear with the Western New York Chamber Orchestra and the Concert Choir from Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in a performance of works by British Composer Ralph Vaughan Williams.

The performance is at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 11 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 1080 Main St. in Buffalo. On the bill will be Vaughan Williams' "Serenade to Music" and "Dona Nobis Pacem," as well as Aaron Copland's "Organ Concerto" played by James Bigham, organist and choirmaster at HTLC. Tickets for this event can be purchased at the door for $10.

The "Sweet Sixteens" and "Varsity Singers" have been a part of the Amherst High School vocal music department for several decades. The groups are traditionally student-led ensembles of auditioned female and male voices, singing a wide variety of music literature from the classical idiom to that of jazz and pop music, to arrangements written by the students themselves.

This year, "Sweets" and "VS" joined forces under the direction of vocal music director Justin Pomietlarz to sing several outreach concerts, including preconcert music for the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus' annual "Messiah" performance.

This year's student leaders are seniors Jamie Meyer and Ian Murray.
