Out of the Past 125 Years Ago March 9, 1882 Tuesday was the most quiet election ever held in this village. As everything was harmonious in the Democrat camp, victory naturally perched on their banner. It is almost as impossible for a Republican to get elected in Amherst as it is for a Democrat in Clarence, and the only way we know of to even things up is to join the two towns together, in which event a pretty interesting contest might be held occasionally. John B. Fiegle was elected supervisor. Charles H. Gotwalt was elected town clerk. Mr. Henry B. Campbell has rented his farm in Amherst, three-fourths of a mile north of Snearly's Corners, to Mr. Emmanuel Cox. An auction will be held at 10 o'clock a.m. on Saturday, March 11th at the house of Edward Robert on the Getzville Road, one-half mile south of the railroad. "Guilt-edged paper - counterfeit notes." "Epitaph for a carpenter: 'Passed on to a higher plane.'" 100 Years Ago March 7, 1907 The annual salary of rural letter carriers will be raised July 1 to $900 on routes of maximum lengths. The present salary is $720. The snowstorm which set in on March 5 turned into a typical March blizzard. Several inches of snow fell, but on account of the high wind, it drifted several feet high in many places. 75 Years Ago March 10, 1932 Supervisor Alfred F. Beiter is calling a special meeting of the property owners through whose farms the proposed Millersport Highway, to be built this summer, will pass. The purpose will be to determine the cost per acre. St. Patrick's evening is suggestive of a social time, and who could think of a more pleasant place to go than the card party and dance of the Snyder Hose Co. next week Thursday, March 17. Born in Amherst on March 12, 1867, and the spending of nearly 65 years in this same community, succumbing on March 4, 1932, is the record of Mrs. Henry Allenbach, whose passing many are mourning. She was the former Mary Duermyer. Warren Wolf, who had the misfortune to badly injure his left elbow while playing basketball Tuesday, is showing marked improvement. The championship-bound Williamsville High basketball team effected a crushing defeat over Akron in one of the season's most brilliant games. Bancroft played a bangup game at center. The Kleinhans Co. advertises the "Buffalonian" spring suit from Hart Schaffner & Marx, $25. Extra trousers, $5 additional. 50 Years Ago March 7, 1957 The identity of the two women who took over twenty records from Juhre's Record Shop in the Sheridan-Harlem Plaza on Saturday, March 2 is known. Prosecution will not be enforced if the records are returned by March 9. Reuben Pastor, president of the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co. of Buffalo and the Buffalo Hockey Club, will entertain all members of the Amherst Little League at the hockey game to be played this Sunday evening at the Memorial Auditorium. Walter D. Hoffman of Snyder, a sophomore premedical student at Hamilton College, has received a scholarship to the University of Paris. The death of Harvey J. Haussauer, 78, occurred on Feb. 27, 1957. His father served for many years as the highway commissioner of Amherst. 25 Years Ago March 3, 1982 A fast-moving fire which claimed the life of an 80-year-old man Feb. 23 in his home at 44 Wellington Court may have been caused by careless smoking, according to Williamsville Chief Rick Andrews. Mary-Diana Pouli, a junior at Williamsville East, recently received the National Council of Christians and Jews Brotherhood to Youth Award. |
