South girls bowling finish second in Class 'B' at sectionals The Williamsville South varsity girls bowling team finished their season off with a runner-up trophy in Class "B" at the Section VI Championships last Thursday at Thruway Lanes. The girls bowled well as a team (4,929 total pins) and ended up seventh out of 50 teams in the overall standings. This was a strong field with the likes of Maryvale (Class "B" champ), Frontier (overall champ) and Lockport (defending champ). It is the second time the Lady Billies were the Class B runner-up (also in 1999), both times finishing second to Maryvale. "This is a huge accomplishment as we have some of the toughest competition in Class 'B'," said South coach Steve Delisanti. "The girls have worked very hard all year and they deserved to walk away with some hardware." South was led by senior Jessica Mamon and seventh grader Tricia Kent, who both averaged 180 for the day. Mamon had the high game for the Lady Billies with a 216 and sophomore Alex Rasey chipped in a 207. Freshman Rachel Broardt averaged 166 over six games and freshman Becca Kent had a six-game total of 982. Junior Jenny Zubricky and sophomore Liz Scimia were also on the sectional roster. Senior Melissa Fanara and freshmen Missy Vetrano, Katherine Wamback and Anissa Bochiechio were tremendous supporters of their teammates. "All the girls were fired up for the day and bowled their hearts out," said Delisanti. "It was a total team effort." The future looks bright for the Billies as Mamon is the only starter leaving from the five player sectional team. "With some hard work in the off-season the girls will be right in the mix as one of the best teams in Section VI again next year," said Delisanti. Earlier in the week South competed in the ECIC rolloffs. Mamon received the high set (611) award for Division II Class "A" and also received season awards for All-ECIC Division II (207 average) and awards for high set (770) and high game (289). Becca Kent also received All-ECIC Division II honors with a 174 average. |
