Sweet Home boys end season with tournament play

Last week was tournament time for the Sweet Home boys bowling team.

The Panthers bowled in three tournaments. The first tournament was the team's annual "King of the Hill" tournament at Manor II Lanes. Each bowler draws for a lane and was paired up against another team member.

This year, both sets of brothers were competing against each other early in the tournament. Ryan Kaminski defeated his brother Dan, 201-182, in the first round. Bill Klein defeated his brother Aaron, 199-181, in the second round.

Josh Terech defeated Jonathan LoPresti, 213-199, Steve Daniels-Robinson, 182-181, and Bill Klein, 147-128, to meet Peter Schafer in the title match. Schafer defeated Shaun Louis, 207-170, and Ryan Kaminski, twice, 193-191, and 201-181, to advance.

In the finals, Schaefer defeated Terech, 190-167, to become the school's 2006-2007 winner of King of the Hill. Ryan Kaminski, the winner from last year's event presented Schaefer with the trophy.

After the tournament, a pin was given to each senior signed by all of their teammates and coaches. Sweet Home girls coach Jim Russo donated the pins to the team.

Daniels-Robinson presented to Terech and told him it was a pleasure having him on the team this year. Schaefer presented a pin to John Grunzweig and praised Grunzweig for his bowling accomplishments the past two years. Grunzweig bowled "B" last year and competed on "A" this season. He was one of the top five bowlers that represented the team at the Section VI Championships later in the week..

Aaron Klein presented a pin to his brother Bill. Even after Bill had knocked Aaron out of the King of the Hill tourney earlier, Aaron was proud of his brother's effort in making the team and qualifying for sectionals as an individual in the final match of competition.

Ryan Kaminski was last to present and gave a pin to his brother Dan. Ryan praised his brother's leadership, being captain of our team. Ryan commented on how his brother had always beaten him in so many sports, he was pleased that he could finally beat Dan in bowling. Both boys would be competing in sectionals on Friday.

Rolloffs were held on Feb. 13 at Thruway Lanes. High for the Panthers was Ryan Kaminski with a 214-586. Aaron Klein (199-556), Jonathan LoPresti (201-553), Dan Kaminski (192-550), and Schaefer (201-546) also contributed.

The Section VI Championships were also held at Thruway Lanes but on Friday. The team struggled and finished 17th among 51 teams.

High scores for the Panthers were rolled by Ryan Kaminski (227, 219-1139), captain Dan Kaminski (224, 201-1049), Aaron Klein (224-1039), Grunzweig (1035) and Schaefer (1016).

Bill Klein and LoPresti competed as individuals. Klein had games of 222, 213 for a 1096 total and LoPresti finished with a 1080.

The Panthers had a great season, defeating West Seneca East in the final match of the season to become co-champions with West Seneca East in Division II.

Aaron Klein and Ryan Kaminski knocked down the exact amount of pins for 30 games, 6253, to average 208.43 for the season. Both boys were named to the All-Star team in Division II. They placed fourth in average for the division.

In the last match of the season, against West Seneca East, Dan Kaminski started his second game with the first 10 strikes. On this 11th ball, he left a split, which he converted for a 288 game. It was the highest game rolled in the division.

Bill Klein rolled games of 212 and 211 to qualify for sectionals.

Boys coach Kathy McDonald thanks Russo, owner of Manor II, for all he did for the Sweet Home boys and girls teams owner and her father, Frank Coburn, for all the hours he spent at the lanes sharing his expertise of the game with the team.
