Goalies step up in Micron Gray, Black Sabres action

In a heated contest, the Micron Gray Sabres, led by star goalie Charleigh Rondeau, held on to defeat the Black Sabres, 7-6, on Sunday despite a valiant effort by goalie Derrek Andrews.

Lighting the lamp for his first season goal was Nick Smith, who found a sliver of light to beat Rondeau. Ryan Chambers and Ethan Barnes followed up with sweet goals, allowing the Black Sabres to jump out to a three-goal lead.

However, Sean Macleay and Jack Ohle wouldn't go away, scoring for the Gray Sabres to close the game to one.

The second period exploded as the Gray Sabres took the lead on an unexplained scoring blitz from Spencer Frome, Andrew Bruno, Alec Cicero and Lorenzo Zendano. Kevin Halpern kept the Black Sabres in it with a hat trick of his own, including a one-timer off a feed from Tyler Rossi. However, Andrew Bruno scored the deciding goal as the Gray Sabres held on.

A late game rally fell short as time expired. Defensively, both teams controlled the puck and never gave up. If not for the butterfly play of both goalies, this game would have been a scoring bonanza
