Laurie Hammel and Eric Kuper

Merrie and Arnie Hammel of Shepherd, Mich., announce the engagement of their daughter, Laurie Hammel, to Eric Kuper, son of Deborah and Michael Kuper of Clarence Center.

Miss Hammel is a 1995 graduate of Shepherd High School. She received a bachelor's degree in math and French horn performance in 2000 and a master's degree in computer science in 2002, both from the University of Michigan. She is employed by the U.S. Department of Defense.

Her fiance is a 1996 graduate of Clarence High School. He received a bachelor's degree in 2000 and master's degree in 2002 in French horn performance, both from the University of Michigan. He plays with the Bay Street Brassworks and is also in the District of Columbia National Guard as a member of the 257th Army Band, officially The Band of the Nation's Capital.

A September 2007 wedding is planned in Ann Arbor, Mich. The couple will reside in Annapolis, Md.
