Cavagnaro scores first career goal in Sabres' shutout victory

The Buffalo Sabres Sled Hockey team recently shut out the Niagara Thunderblades, 10-0.

Amy Cavagnaro (Getzville) started the scoring with her first sled hockey goal of her career with a low shot that beat the goalie to the left side.

Tyler Ball (Lancaster) scored the next two goals when his hard work in front of the net paid off. Assists went to Brandon Kick (Cheektowaga) and Adam Melluso (Amherst).

A perfect feed from Stefan Kothe (Getzville) sent Jared Cutler (Amherst) on a breakaway. Cutler scored to make it 4-0 after the first period.

The Sabres' added three goals in the second period.

Dan Murray (Buffalo) scored from the left side from a perfect pass from Nick Walker (West Seneca). Matt Murray (Buffalo) scored the next two goals with assists from Christoph Kothe (Getzville) and Melluso.

Goalie Erich LeRoy (Hamburg) was playing a great game and the only thing the Sabres were worried about was preserving the shutout.

In the third period, the Sabres' Jeremy Fuller (Hamburg) took a perfect pass from Zach Andrews and beat the goalie with a low shot to the glove side. Cutler recorded his second goal of the game with assists from Andrews and Cavagnaro. Dan Murray picked up his second of the game with assists from Kick and Melluso.

The Sabres dedicated the game in memory of Amy's brother, John, who died in his sleep the morning of Jan. 13.

Aladdin invite

The Buffalo Sabres Sled Hockey team recently traveled to Columbus, Ohio for the fourth annual Aladdin Invitational Sled Hockey Tournament.

The Sabres opened with a 2-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Jared Cutler (Amherst) scored the Sabres' only goal on a breakaway. Cutler received a perfect pass from Adam Melluso (Amherst) and Brandon Kick (Cheektowaga). The Penguins tied it in the second and scored the game winner in the third. The Sabres had their chances in the third period but Christoph Kothe (Getzville), Dan Murray (Buffalo) and Tyler Ball (Lancaster) each hit a goal post.

The Sabres then ran into a young, fast Columbus Blue Jackets and lost the host team, 3-0. Eric LeRoy (Hamburg) played a great game in net, but the Sabres couldn't get any offense against the Blue Jackets.

The offense came to life against in a 6-1 win over the Cleveland Barons. Melluso opened the Sabres' scoring from Stefan Kothe (Getzville) and Matt Murray (Buffalo). Cutler added two goals with assists going to Christoph Kothe and Ball. Brandon Kick (Murray, Kothe) as well as Hamburg's Jermany Fuller and Amherst's Justin Erckert rounded out the Sabres scoring.

The Sabres' last game was a 5-0 shutout over Grand Rapids. Cutler, Kothe, Dan Murray, Matt Murray and Melluso scored goals. Goalie Erich LeRoy earned the shutout.
