Sacred Heart indoor track remains unbeaten Sacred Heart remained unbeaten in indoor track after winning at Lancaster High School last Saturday. The Sharks finished with 101.5 total points. Holy Angels was second with 64.5 points. Sacred Heart hasn't lost a meet (12-0) since the sport was introduced to the Monsignor Martin Association four years ago. This year was a little different as the league was not recognized by the MMA Executive Committee and Sarkovics could only secure two meets at Lancaster. The teams also ran in a non-scoring meet at St. Mary's of Lancaster. "The league said we don't have enough meets to make it worthwhile to fund," said Sacred Heart coach Rod Sarkovics, whose idea it was to create the league. "I said I'm having indoor track regardless and the same teams who have been with us in the league said they would stay too." The Sharks won four of nine events on Saturday. Jenna and Jackie Piecuch won the triple jump (28-3½) and long jump (12-8), respectively. Jenna Piecuch won the 900 in 3:13.3 followed by Jackie. Both were also on the team's winning 4x750-meter relay in 10:32. Also running with them were Kerry Hurley and Stephanie Smith. Kim Patterson was second in the 1200 (4:31.8). Melissa Federice ran well in the 55. Sarkovics also lauded the work of sprinter Christine Loftus. While the season was shortened by one meet this year, Sarkovics said he was happy with how his team ran. He is also paying out of his pocket for team awards. e-mail: pnagy@beenews.com |
