South boys bowlers place second at Roy Summers tourney

With the Section VI Championships about a week away, the Williamsville South boys bowling team is peaking at the right time.

The Billies finished second at the 28th Roy Summers Memorial Invitational on Saturday at Thruway Lanes. It was the highest finish in school history.

South finished with 6121 total pins. Lew-Port's "A" team won with 6366. South beat teams as far away as West Irondequoit and Liverpool and as near as Niagara Falls, Niagara Wheatfield and Lockport.

All-Tournament selection Russ Scheiss led all bowlers with a 1389 high series, which equals a 231.5 average. He was tied for second with Webster-Schroeder's Marc Harding and Lew-Port's Zane Tester for high game (279). Scheiss also shot a 267 and 257.

Scheiss' teammate Colin Ballou rolled a tournament best 290. Ballou had a 1268 series (211.3 average), including games of 217 and 222.

Alex Petrie shot over 200 in four of the six games, including a 226. He finished third on the team with an 1189 series (198.2 average).

Adam Petrie shot a 211 in the fifth game and had an 1172 series (195.3 average).

Tony Cirbus rolled his own 211 but in the first game. He finished with an 1103 total series (183.8 average).

"They never gave up and never gave in," said South coach Rick Newton. "Throughout the six games between morning and afternoon, they went head to head against the best teams around, remained steady under fire and stayed in the fight until the final frame. This team not only passed the test but in my book scored an "A". I am incredibly proud of these guys."

Newton said the team is also extremely fortunate to have a facility like Transit Lanes and the help of Jack Jurek providing the team with a great bowling atmosphere and pro shop support, as well as travel league coaches, Paul Mammon and Mike Petrie, who provide the highest quality year round instruction and guidance.

"Teamwork extends far beyond the players, and we are grateful to the families who support these kids, laying a foundation for success now and in later life," he added.

The Billies fell to 6-3 in ECIC Division II with a 7-0 loss last Wednesday at Wimbledon Lanes against West Seneca East.

Alex Petrie led the Billies with a 671 set. Ballou added a 248 with a 644 set. Scheiss rolled a high game of 258 with a 606 set.

Alex Petrie is second in ECIC II in average (210.1). Scheiss has the fifth highest game (268).

Sectionals are Feb. 15 at Thruway.

"This team has a chance at sectionals to be the best boys bowling team ever to wear the Billie blue," said Newton.

Sweet Home's boys bowling team (6-2) defeated Williamsville East by over 800 pins on Jan. 31 at Transit Lanes, winning the match, 7-0.
