Program takes frustration out of college aid applications Before deciding between a local or out-of-town college, whether to dorm or commute and what groups or committees to join, students have to know how to pay for their education. Applying for scholarships and state and federal aid are among the numerous steps that can leave students confused and unsure of how to handle the process. Simply College is a Web-based nationwide program that was recently launched in Amherst. Designed to help parents and students, the program takes them through the steps needed to apply for financial aid. Charlene Haykel, founder and president of Simply College, said she has 20 years experience simplifying information in the business and banking world. But when faced with a project involving student financial aid material she found herself dealing with a confusing situation. "I realized how complex and confusing it was trying to get money for school," she said, adding that it's an area that needs simplicity, and one where a lot of people need help. Assisting in the development of the programming materials is Rene Boltri, vice president of operating. With 17 years of experience in higher education, Boltri said she knew there were gaps in the system. "There is just too much information. We provide just the pertinent information and explain how and when to do what," she said. Simply College costs $60 and includes a step-by-step binder starting in the student's junior year of high school. A Web program also provides guidance, along with 100 minutes of telephone assistance. One of the issues Simply College addresses is deadlines. Students often miss them due to application frustration or by just not knowing the rules. Boltri said the program is the only one of its kind because of its three levels of assistance - the binder, Web site and telephone. "Simply College tells students they need to this this, and how, when to and what to do," she said. "And you can call if you need help." For program information, visit www. simply- college. com. |
