Bruins shut down Black Sabres

The Mite Bruins defeated the Black Sabres, 3-0 on Sunday, avenging an opening day loss from November.

The first period was highlighted by strong defensive play by both teams.

Justin Presutti, Quinn Verpoten, Leah Czerwinski, Elena Kotrides and Matthew Maynard led the Bruins' defense while Spencer Marranto, Nicholas Pieri, and Hunter Noll led the Black Sabres' defense.

The period ended with goalies Ellie Garrity and Noah Bachwitz turning away all attempts.

The Bruins ended the scoreless tie with a breakaway goal from Cole Donhauser in the middle of the second period. Bruins Steven Metzger, Jacob Zurat and Dylan Birzon kept the Black Sabres on their heels all period.

Goalie Garrity continued her shutout with one great save after another.

The hard work of Birzon and Metzger finally paid off when Birzon found the back of the net, putting the Bruins up by two.

Later in the period, Joey DeMarco netted his 15th goal of the season. Working hard in the corners with Joshua Gordon, DeMarco was able to beat the goaltender top shelf.

The game ended with the Black Sabres trying to mount pressure on the Bruins. But had been the case all game long, the back checking of Anthony DeMaria, Matt Drewery and Christopher Mostowy let the Bruins continue on to the shutout win.
