Sweet Home beats WS West, evens record It wasn't pretty but Sweet Home found a way to win, 58-47, at West Seneca West, on Thursday to improve to 5-5 in ECIC Division II play. Tied at 6-6 after the first quarter and 22-21 at halftime, Sweet Home played aggressive defense to take a 38-28 advantage after three quarters. "We came out a little slow in the first half, but out of halftime, we played much better," said Sweet Home coach Matt LaRoach. "I thought our defense was much more aggressive in the second half as we were able to put more pressure on their guards and cause some turnovers." "Our defense is what will win us basketball games," he continued. "I am pleased with the fact that even though we came out a little sluggish, we found it in us to play a much stronger second, third, and fourth quarter." Ellie Allen scored a career-high 32 points to lead the Lady Panthers. She shot 10-of-11 free throws and four-of-five from three-point range. She also grabbed eight rebounds "Ellie stepped up big for us on the offensive side of the ball," LaRoach said. "She was able to create the shot we needed. She went to the rim hard and was great from the free throw line." Coretta Davis added 10 points and 13 rebounds. "I was impressed by Coretta's energy," said LaRoach. "She was all over the floor rebounding, scoring, and playing strong defense." LaRoach said Gleniesha Ferby gave Sweet Home a nice spark off the bench with eight points and three steals. "Her defense was great," LaRoach said. West Seneca West was led by Ann Marie Reedy's 14 points. Sweet Home, 6-9 overall, returned to action on Tuesday against Lancaster but results were unavailable before The Bee went to press. They host Orchard Park at 5 p.m. on Friday during Hall of Fame Night. |
