Joan Scott Hovorka, 83, of Wild Tiger Road, Boulder, Colo., formerly of Williamsville, a retired school psychologist, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2007.
Born in Indianapolis, Ind., she earned a bachelor's degree from Denison University, Ohio, in 1945 and a master's degree in clinical psychology from Ohio State University in 1946.
She performed her clinical internship at the Bradley Home for Disturbed Children in Rhode Island and subsequently administered aptitude tests to returning war veterans at Harvard University. She pursued a Ph.D. in clinical psychology at Indiana University and had a fulfilling career as a school psychologist in Williamsville and then Clarence until her retirement in 1985.
In retirement, Mrs. Hovorka and Ed, her husband of 57 years, moved to the mountains west of Boulder. She was an advocate for Voices For Children CASA, participated on the board of the Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence and was involved with the Democratic Women of Boulder County.
She was a master wordsmith and lived to read, often simultaneously reading numerous books on an eclectic selection of subjects.
She also was an avid naturalist, outdoorswoman, SCUBA diver, camper and traveler.
Besides her husband Ed, Mrs. Hovorka is survived by two daughters, Susan and Gail; a son, Dirk; and two grandchildren.
A memorial in Boulder is planned in March. Donations may be made to Voices For Children or the Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence.
