Senior scholars also honored musicians
by LAUREN HALL

Jenny Zhang
Williamsville North Student Council proudly recognizes the outstanding achievements of two members of its senior class each month. Students featured in this column are selected by faculty recommendation. The Senior Spartan Spots for January are Jenny Zhang and Joshua Siva.

Zhang, daughter of Xingru and Lijuan Zhang of Williamsville, has an impressive academic resume that was enhanced when she was named salutatorian of the Class of 2007. Zhang is also a National Merit Scholarship Commended Student and a recipient of the National AP Scholar Award.

Zhang contributes to the school by serving as editor of the Olympian Yearbook, treasurer of National Honor Society, historian of Amnesty International and valuable member of the Science Olympiad team and Math Honor Society.

Also a talented musician, Zhang plays the violin in North's orchestra, of which she is the vice president. In addition, Zhang has competed with the New York State Federation of Music Clubs, where she has earned superior ratings as a piano soloist since 1998. At this week's North orchestra concerto concert, Zhang will be the featured piano soloist in its performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1.

Joshua Siva
Zhang plans to study either business or communications at college.

Siva, son of Julian and Sue Siva of East Amherst, has met success in a variety of interest areas. Siva is currently the vice president of the senior class and has been a class officer each year at North. He is also a member of National Honor Society, vice president of Environmental Club and treasurer of Science Olympiad. Siva is a four-year varsity volleyball player, for which he has been named a scholar athlete.

Siva also finds the time to feed his passion for music composition. His contemporary full-band compositions have been played in concert by North's Wind Ensemble at Kleinhans Music Hall and won top awards from the New York State School Music Association, New York State Band Directors Association, and National PTSA Reflections Contest.

In pursuit of his goal to become a physician, Siva studies at the Connections/New Visions Medical Program at Millard Fillmore Hospital. He plans to continue his medical education next year at the University of Pittsburgh.
